Parks
Traer's area parks offer something for everyone!
TAYLOR PARK
Named after Traer's first mayor and located in the center of town, Taylor Park attracts visitors from around the country to see it's beautiful winter holiday light display, to picnic and celebrate life's special events, and to play in the cool waters of the pool. This park has a beautiful gazebo which hosts wedding parties being photographed as well as musicians playing summer concerts. The large enclosed pavilion is often rented for graduation parties and family reunions. Those travelling in an RV often stop at the park's dump station and then stay to play for a while. Beginning with the annual Easter egg hunt, summer brings families to the playground and barbeque pits and residents to the basketball court and horseshoe pits.
LIONS' PARK
Located on Second Street, across from the library, Lion's Park is also lighted for the winter holiday season when it hosts Santa as he hears the wishes of local children. Filled with blooming plants and flowers this park is a small oasis where one can sit on a bench, relax and watch the world go by.
DENNIS PARK
Just across Walnut Street from the school, local students are often found at Dennis Park during recess. With playground equipment and basketball courts, this park is a favorite for the active youth of Traer. With such a convenient location, this park is an easy walk or bike ride for any resident.
WILSON NATURE PRESERVE
Established in 1990 to memorialize long-time residents Carl and Evelyn Wilson, signs along Highway 63 direct visitors to this two-acre prairie restoration which also includes a butterfly park and a small woodland of native trees. Located in the Prairie West subdivision in southwest Traer, Wilson Nature Preserve has been called "one of the most unique city parks in Iowa." There are currently over 10 native grasses and 75 native flowers in the preserve. Since there is only one-tenth of one percent of a tall grass virgin prairie left in Iowa, this beautiful park provides an opportunity to view what used to be common in 85% of the state. Those signing their names to the park's log add their signatures to those from 27 other states and 5 foreign countries. Naturally, the summer months are the optimum time to visit. Explore on your own or receive a guided tour from the Preserve's caretakers Ray and Yvette Berner by calling 319/478-2007
CLARK'S PARK
Located just minutes north-east of Traer, Clark's Park is a country retreat for outdoor activities. This shady park is a favorite for campers with it's barbeque pits, picnic tables, and camp sites. Word has it that morel mushrooms were even found in Clark's Park one spring, not too long ago.
